San Diego is known for its beautiful beaches, but if you’re visiting with kids, sometimes you need a break from the sand. The good news? There are plenty of great parks and playgrounds near Mission Beach where your little ones can burn off energy while you enjoy some fresh air and shade.

Here are our favorite family-friendly parks and playgrounds, all within a short drive (or bike ride!) from Mission Beach:

1. Fanuel Street Park (Pacific Beach)

📍 1.5 miles from Mission Beach

Located right on the bay, this waterfront park is ideal for younger children. The playground is modern and safe, with padded surfaces, and there’s plenty of grassy space for picnics or kicking around a soccer ball. Bonus: the calm waters of Mission Bay are just steps away.

Highlights: Bayfront views, toddler-friendly playground, picnic areas, walkable from some rentals.

2. Bonita Cove Park

📍 0.5 miles from central Mission Beach

A short walk from the boardwalk, Bonita Cove is a favorite for families who want a mix of beach access and shaded playtime. There’s a small but fun playground, wide lawns for games, and calm bay water that’s perfect for paddleboarding or wading.

Highlights: Shady trees, nearby bathrooms, BBQ areas, playground, and close to Belmont Park.

3. Mission Bay Park (Multiple Locations)

📍 Access from multiple points near Mission Beach

This massive park system surrounds much of Mission Bay and includes several playgrounds, bike paths, picnic spots, and wide-open spaces. It’s perfect for group outings, birthday parties, or just relaxing in the grass after a morning at the beach.

Tips for Park Days with Kids:

  • Bring layers – Even sunny San Diego can get breezy near the water.
  • Pack snacks and water – Not all parks have nearby food options.
  • Sunscreen and hats – Shaded areas can be limited, especially midday.
  • Check restrooms – Most parks listed here have public restrooms, but not all do.
